The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS : www.bfs.de) is an organisationally independent, scientific-technical, higher federal authority in the portfolio of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB). BfS works for the safety and protection of humans and the environment against damage due to ionising and non-ionising radiation.

BfS offers a visit to its facilities on Wednesday, 6 September 2017, and Thursday, 7 September 2017. The visit includes four stations:

  • Low-level gamma lab which is part of the “Coordinating Office for issues relating to the monitoring of environmental radioactivity in case of enhanced natural radioactivity (ENORM)”.
  • Accredited calibration laboratory which provides defined concentrations of radon and its decay products in closed volumes and offers a calibration service of measuring devices.
  • Technical equipment of the federal unit for the defence against nuclear hazards, e.g. self-propelled manipulator with detector, measurement equipment for contaminated crime scenes, airlock for personnel and court exhibits.
  • Whole and partial body counter for routine measurements of incorporated gamma emitters and special measurements (e.g. iodine isotopes in the thyroid gland, Pb-210 in bones).

A touring coach will transport interested conference participants from the Maritim Hotel (conference venue) to the BfS premises free of charge. The touring coach will depart at 5 p.m. from Maritim Hotel and at 8 p.m. from the BfS premises back to the Maritim Hotel.
